In her pursuit of a better life in America, Debra Allicock also learned how to bake apple pie. In 2000, she migrated to New York from Guyana and took a job as a home-health aide with SeniorBridge, helping the elderly with errands, meals and light housekeeping.You get to get very close and attached with them," she says of her clients. "They become like family." Ms. Allicock, who for many years as a teenager raised her three siblings alone, says her services are in high demand and for good reason. "Why go to a nursing home when you can stay in your home surrounded by everything you love?" she says.."One client was a beautiful southern woman. She would teach me how to make simple things, like apple pie."
