SeniorBridge Care Management and Homecare Expertise Highlighted by AOL's Everyday Health Blog
Everyday Health, the leading, online health website reaching more unique visitors than Web MD, Yahoo! Health, and About.com, featured an article by SeniorBridge’s own Registered Nurse and Care Manager, Patricia L. Cruise about coping with a family member’s pain resulting from a chronic condition. The article spotlights the role of a care manager in helping to identify pain management strategies as well as empowering family to avoid burn-out in the wake of regular reports of pain.
Below is an excerpt of the article, which was featured on Everyday Health’s The RA Caregiving Guide, where numerous articles written by our professionals and experts will be published, all discussing different aspects of caring for clients or loved ones living with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Caregivers: Responding to Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain
If you take care of someone with rheumatoid arthritis , you know how emotionally exhausting and draining it can be to regularly hear about their pain – especially when you feel incapable of providing solace. Here’s how Jodi Magee dealt with the challenges of hearing about her mom’s rheumatoid arthritis -related pain.
Keep Rheumatoid Arthritis Pain in Perspective
As a geriatric care manager, I visit Jodi’s mom, who has rheumatoid arthritis, every other week and email Jodi reports about each visit. One thing Jodi told me she really appreciates is that I never use the word “complain” to describe her mom’s comments about her rheumatoid arthritis. Rather, I might say she “reports” pain.
“It’s a simple nuance in phrasing but it helps me better respond and cope when I am reminded that my mother is not whining about her rheumatoid arthritis, but rather providing an account of her condition,” says Jodi. That perspective makes hearing the information less emotional and more focused – which in turn becomes a lot less draining.
